While there's a push for quicker surgeries to diagnose endometriosis (a condition that can cause persistent pelvic pain), many women experience similar pain without having endometriosis confirmed. People with- and without endometriosis can both experience persistent pelvic pain.
The research aimed to evaluate how well the levonorgestrel-intrauterine device (also known at the Mirena IUD) helped manage pain and overall satisfaction among women with this persistent pelvic pain. The study tracked 72 women who had the Mirena IUD inserted, with follow-up assessments conducted after 6-18 months.
Findings showed that as time went on after getting the Mirena IUD, women reported less menstrual pain and greater satisfaction with their pain management. Interestingly, factors like age, previous surgeries, or having a confirmed endometriosis diagnosis did not significantly affect their pain or satisfaction levels.
In summary, this small study concludes that using the Mirena IUD can effectively help manage pelvic pain in women, whether or not they have endometriosis, making it a good initial treatment option for those affected by this type of pain.
